Best Health Insurance Providers in Germany for International Students (2026)

International student consulting with a doctor about health insurance in Germany before studying abroad.

Choosing health insurance is one of the most important decisions you'll make before or after moving to Germany.

If you've already read my previous guide about public vs. private health insurance, you probably know that the right choice depends on your age, study program, and future plans in Germany.

However, choosing between public and private insurance is only the first step. The next question is:

Which health insurance provider should you actually choose?

Germany has many health insurance companies, and it can be confusing to compare them for the first time. Some providers offer excellent English support, while others are known for their local offices, digital services, or student-friendly plans.

In this guide, I'll introduce some of the most popular public and private health insurance providers for international students, explain who they are best suited for, and share my own recommendation based on personal experience.

Why Choosing the Right Health Insurance Provider Matters

Unlike many other countries, Germany requires almost everyone to have valid health insurance.

Although public health insurance providers offer very similar basic medical coverage because they are regulated by German law, there are still important differences.

Some providers offer:

  • Better English-speaking customer service
  • Easier online registration
  • More convenient mobile apps
  • Better digital communication
  • Additional health programs and bonus benefits

Private health insurance providers vary even more. Coverage, reimbursement, prices, and eligibility depend on the insurance plan you choose.

For this reason, comparing providers before signing a contract is always worthwhile.

Best Public Health Insurance Providers

Germany has more than 90 statutory health insurance funds (Krankenkassen). While the basic medical coverage is largely the same by law, customer service, digital features, and additional benefits can differ.

Below are some of the most popular choices among international students.

Techniker Krankenkasse (TK)

Best Overall for International Students

TK is probably the most recommended public health insurance provider among international students.

Many universities are familiar with TK, and one of its biggest advantages is its excellent English-language support. The registration process is straightforward, and the mobile app is one of the best among German public insurance providers.

Pros

  • Excellent English support
  • Easy online registration
  • Modern mobile app
  • Fast digital communication
  • Popular among universities

Best For

  • Bachelor's students
  • Master's students
  • Students planning to stay in Germany long-term
  • Students who prefer English customer service

AOK

Best Local Support

AOK is one of Germany's largest public health insurance providers and has local offices throughout the country.

If you prefer speaking with someone in person instead of handling everything online, AOK can be an excellent choice.

Keep in mind that AOK consists of several regional organizations, so customer service and English support may vary slightly depending on your city.

Pros

  • Many local offices
  • Reliable customer service
  • Good nationwide coverage
  • Easy face-to-face assistance

Best For

  • Students who prefer visiting local offices
  • Long-term students
  • Students planning to work in Germany after graduation

It is especially known for its digital services, online communication, and user-friendly mobile application.

Pros

  • Good English support
  • Convenient mobile app
  • Digital document management

Best For

  • Students comfortable using online services
  • International students who rarely visit local offices

DAK-Gesundheit

Reliable Traditional Provider

DAK is one of Germany's oldest public health insurance providers.

It offers reliable customer service, preventive healthcare programs, and nationwide coverage.

Although it is not as commonly recommended among international students as TK, many German residents use DAK.

Pros

  • Reliable service
  • Nationwide coverage
  • Preventive healthcare programs
  • Long-established reputation

Best For

  • Long-term residents
  • Students looking for a traditional public insurance provider

BKK Health Insurance Funds

Unlike TK or AOK, BKK is not a single insurance company.

Instead, BKK refers to a group of company-based public health insurance funds (Betriebskrankenkassen).

Different BKK funds may offer slightly different additional benefits and contribution rates, but they all provide the standard public health insurance coverage required by German law.

Pros

  • Public health insurance coverage
  • Competitive additional benefits
  • Available in many regions

Best For

  • Students comparing regional public insurance options

Best Private Health Insurance Providers

Private health insurance is often chosen by:

  • Erasmus students
  • Exchange students
  • Language students
  • Students over 30
  • Students who are not eligible for the reduced public student rate

Unlike public insurance, private insurance plans can differ significantly depending on the provider and the specific policy.

Some plans are designed specifically for international students, while others provide broader private health insurance coverage.

Always make sure that your insurance plan meets your university's and immigration office's requirements before purchasing it.

My Personal Recommendation

There is no single "best" health insurance provider for every international student in Germany.

The right choice depends on your age, visa status, university requirements, and how long you plan to stay in Germany.

If You Are Eligible for Public Health Insurance

If you qualify for Germany's public student health insurance, I would personally recommend starting with Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) or the AOK available in your region.

From what I have seen, these are two of the most commonly used providers among international students. TK is especially popular because of its English-language support, user-friendly mobile app, and simple online registration process. AOK is another excellent option, particularly for students who prefer visiting a local office for in-person assistance.

Since public health insurance providers offer almost the same basic medical coverage by law, the biggest differences are usually customer service, digital features, and additional benefits rather than the medical treatment itself.

If You Need Private Health Insurance

My own situation was a little different.

Because I enrolled in Germany after turning 30, I was no longer eligible for the reduced public student health insurance rate. As a result, I needed to choose a private insurance option.

After comparing several providers, I decided to use Mawista.

The main reason was simple: it was one of the insurance companies I saw recommended most often among international students, and many students around me were already using it.

So far, my experience has been positive.

Fortunately, I haven't had any major problems with my insurance. While private health insurance may require you to pay certain medical expenses first and request reimbursement afterward, the reimbursement process has been straightforward in my experience.

Of course, this is only my personal experience.

Your situation may be completely different depending on your age, previous insurance history, degree program, and future plans in Germany.

Before purchasing any insurance policy, always compare the coverage, monthly cost, reimbursement rules, and your university's specific requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which public health insurance is most popular among international students?

Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) is often considered one of the most popular choices because of its English-language support and convenient digital services. Regional AOK providers are also widely used, especially by students who prefer local offices.

Is private health insurance cheaper than public health insurance?

It depends on your situation.

Some private insurance plans designed for international students can have lower monthly premiums than public health insurance. However, lower prices may also mean different coverage limits or reimbursement rules.

Always compare the exact insurance plan instead of only comparing the monthly cost.

Can international students over 30 still get public health insurance?

Students over 30 are generally no longer eligible for the discounted statutory student health insurance rate.

Depending on your previous insurance history and residence status, voluntary public health insurance may still be possible in some cases. If not, private health insurance is often the alternative.

Will every university accept private health insurance?

Not necessarily.

Some private insurance plans meet university and immigration requirements, while others may not.

Before purchasing private insurance, always confirm that your university accepts the specific insurance plan you intend to use.

Should I choose public or private health insurance?

There is no universal answer.

Public health insurance is generally a good choice for degree students who plan to stay in Germany for several years.

Private health insurance can be more suitable for exchange students, language students, or students who are not eligible for the standard public student insurance.

Final Thoughts

Germany offers many excellent health insurance providers, and there is no single company that is perfect for every international student.

Rather than searching for the "best" provider, focus on finding the insurance that

best matches your personal situation, including your age, study program, visa status, and long-term plans.

For students who qualify for public health insurance, providers such as TK, AOK, Barmer, and DAK are among the most trusted options.

For students who need private health insurance, providers including Mawista, Dr. Walter, Care Concept, HanseMerkur, and Ottonova are commonly considered depending on individual circumstances.

Take time to compare prices, coverage, customer service, and reimbursement policies before making your decision.

Choosing the right health insurance at the beginning of your stay in Germany can save you time, money, and unnecessary stress later.
